Why you should keep wearing your sunglasses outdoors this winter

11th Feb 2025

As we head towards winter (here in the UK), cloudy days will of course be more prevalent. But don’t put your sunglasses away! It's not widely known that even on cool days with cloudy and overcast skies, over 80 percent of the UV rays will still come through.
UV should be taken seriously, but it's probably fair to say most people don’t think about it on a daily basis. Long term exposure to UV is linked to a whole host of health issues including cataracts, macular degeneration (resulting in blurry vision) and cancers surrounding the eye.
So keep in mind that UV rays on cloudy days are just as dangerous as they are on bright, sunny days. As our eyes are 10 times more sensitive to UV than our skin, more than any other organ the eye can suffer significant injury from the sun; so be sure to wear sunglasses and skin protection while outside at all times of the year.
